First of all, we have to make a few distinctions clear. The most common misunderstanding is that optimizing a site and submitting it is the same thing as search engine optimization. It is this misunderstanding that has lured many a naïve website owner into the traps of companies who charge a lump sum to create the meta-tags for your site, submit it to the major search engines (usually with automated software) and then sit back and hope for the best. Other companies simply advertise the software and let the client try and do it themselves. Meanwhile, the client is expecting their site and their business to experience a miraculous influx of new activity and revenues simply because they spent a substantial sum of money to have their site “optimized”.

Peerless Optimization is not in the hit and run, one-time submission business. We engage in a search engine optimization campaign. What’s a campaign, you ask? Good question. A campaign is a whole series of calculated tasks, a long progression of steps, that when taken intelligently, and effectively, will result in the kind of top search engine rankings that you came to this company looking for in the first place.

Just like it sounds, a campaign is actually a lengthy process, a process in which the client must be involved. As much as many people would like to hand over a retainer and go back to running their business, an effective campaign
is impossible without the help of the client. After all, who knows your
business better than you? We try to streamline the process and minimize your involvement by being very effective at getting the information from the client that we require as thoroughly and as expeditiously as possible. Most of the client interaction will take place in the first few weeks. After that, we can pretty much handle the whole show on our own. Some clients actually like hearing from us every other day or so… it lets them know we’re actually working for them.

Perhaps it would be easier to understand if we break down the search engine optimization campaign as we see it into a few basic stages.

Stage I: This is the “getting to know you” phase, when we work together to get an in depth understanding of who you are, what your company does and/or offers, who your target markets are, and what those potential customers/clients are likely to search for when looking on the search engines for that which your company provides. When done effectively, our researchers have a pretty good understanding of your business and your customers, and from there they can begin to determine all the possible ways those customers might come to your door. (From the search engines, that is).

Stage II: We come up with an exhaustive list of the keywords and keyword phrases people are actually typing into those search boxes you see on every search engine. We utilize services such as WordTracker.com and Overture’s Search Term Suggestion Tool along with Client input to get started. We try and eliminate terms that would not bring in the kind of traffic you want, such as traffic from potential customers in regions beyond your serviceable area. We further knock off terms that will come up automatically because we are optimizing other terms that cover them. We determine the kind of traffic each term could generate, how often they are typed, how competitive they are, who your competition is (as if you didn’t know!), what others utilizing pay-per-click services are paying for top rankings for the same terms, and lay it all out in a spreadsheet for our Client’s review.

At the same time that this search term research is taking place, our
talented web designers evaluate your site to determine how ‘search engine optimization friendly’ or ‘unfriendly’ the Client’s website is. Many sites, while they look fantastic, are their own worst enemy when it comes to search engine optimization, effectively eliminating the opportunity to achieve high search engine rankings. We are not about to try and explain what makes one website good for optimization and another one bad. What we can do is make your search engine optimization unfriendly website more “Optimizable”. Whether building a brand new website from scratch, or reengineering an existing site our Web Design Department works hand in hand with our Optimization Department to get the Client the best possible results. We are able to do this while striving to remain true to the original design of the site.

Stage III:  Now its time for the Client to make a decision on what kind of search engine optimization campaign is suitable. Our Basic Search Engine Optimization Plan cavers up to 10 key words, has an initial down payment of $2,500.00, and monthly maintenance of $250.00 per month. The monthly maintenance typically doesn’t kick in until the 4th month, so the Basic Package runs about $5,000.00 per year.

A Custom Campaign is limited in scope and degree of success only by the Client’s budget. In the proposal, we will give a breakdown of what each keyword will cost per month based upon the level of success we can achieve. If we are in the Top 20, we are at the lowest possible rate. The cost increases occur at the Top 10, Top 5, and Number 1 Position. The prices vary on competitiveness of each keyword phrase. Obviously it would be easier to get ‘spider hunter’ a Top 5 position on the major search engines than it would be to get that same ranking for ‘personal injury lawyer’. Therefore, in fairness to both spider hunters and personal injury lawyers alike, we must price each keyword phrase on a case by case basis. The harder we have to work to get the Client the results that will bring the most success to their business, the more we would like to be rewarded. If we can only get a Client to Position 21, we get paid nothing. This is not to say that the Client won’t see an increase in traffic and attract more clients/customers, we just feel we should be able to do at least that well if we’re going to set the standard in search engine optimization.

Stage IV: Now that a decision has been made as to just how much the Client wants to shove all the competition down the ladder a rung or two, all the really boring work begins. All of the pages of the Clients site, NOT just the Home Page, are optimized for certain keywords relevant to that page or series of pages in the Client’s site. Content is developed, re-developed, or expanded upon in order to include as much relevant information about the Client’s business, etc., and therefore make the Client’s website rank highly for certain search terms entered on the search engines. It really is quite a bit more complicated than this, but if we could explain it all in a paragraph or two, it wouldn’t be much of a skill.

Following the content work and any actual website design that needs reengineering, links to other high traffic sites relevant to Client’s site, business, or product/service, may be added. This builds what is called ‘Link Popularity’, and is 2nd only to content in winning the search engine optimization war. Our new Clients immediately obtain the benefit of having other successful Peerless clients (with related sites) linked to their website and vice-versa, greatly accelerating the new Client’s link popularity almost overnight.

Upon completion of the first round of development, reengineering, and linking, the changes are uploaded by Client or by Peerless and the ‘new’ site is submitted to over 300 search engines. As we mentioned earlier, about 96% of search engine traffic flows from 8 major search engines. However, we wouldn’t want to miss the  occasional ‘odd duck’ customer who happens to use one of the other 300 or so search engines we submit to, and also happens to be your future biggest client/customer. Our Optimization Department will make periodic updates and changes to your site to keep it from becoming stagnant, and therefore dropping through the ranks of the search engines into oblivion. Once again, depending on the Client’s budget and desire to Rank Number 1, we can continue to research and ad relevant content, develop and add high profile links, and so on, until there is no possible way any other site could possibly rank higher than yours under the search terms. In a very few short years the competition to be in even the Top 30 Rankings will be as fierce as it is for the Number 1 Position now, even more so.
